ideation...
BLUE SKY THINKING
!
What is the aim?
The aim is to be able to think beyond the obvious and think to the future if present day restrictions were not in place how could you solve the problem...there should be no limits to your creativity here. The ideas you come up with are unlikely to be realistic right now but they might allow you to think differently and consider a realistic version or inspire a different solution.

For example:

Design Brief
design a product to help someone with arthritis find it easier to write.

Blue Sky solution
the user can think what they want to write, a pen can pick up what the user is thinking and writes it down in the users own handwriting style.
Although the above solution is a little extreme and will need a number of developments in technology it might lead/inspire a solution that is realistic...

Realistic solution:
an app that listens to what the user says and then writes it in their own handwriting style that can then be printed off if needed
The technique
You have a go at designing a solution to your brief answering these questions...

What if...you didn't actually have to prototype this object after you had designed it?

What if...you could design a new material?

What if...you had a material that changed form when it reacted to an external stimuli?

What if...you were designing your product 200 years into the future?

What if...humans could telepathically talk to objects?

What if...anything was possible?

You should now have a few weird and wacky ideas but do any of them have some aspect to them that could actually work or inspire a new idea? But your blue sky thinking sketches in and then if any have inspired 1 or 2 ideas draw them as some of your 10 initial concepts.
