RENDER & MARKETING

MAKING A PRESENTATION BOARD

A slide that presents your final design in as realistic a way as possible, and that includes other information that can help your primary user and stakeholders visualise and imagine the context in which your design idea could work is extremely useful. By doing this, you can ensure that the feedback you receive from them is as informed as possible.

Within the context of your NEA, you are also demonstrating that you have fully thought through your design, that you can see a concept through to its full potential, and that you are utilising all of your skills of communication.

This could include:

  • CAD renders of your design idea that look more realistic than in OnShape

  • Setting your product against backgrounds or in relation to images of humans that provide context

  • Marketing and advertising ideas (such as what the packaging or graphic elements such as logos might look like)

  • Animations and simulations of operational aspects of your design

  • Wider stakeholder input/opinion to provide credibility for your design

Tools for rendering

OnShape itself provides the ability to choose materials and finishes that are perfectly adequate for demonstrating your product. You may, however, wish to take this a step further and there are online tools that can help you do this. At school we use Fusion 360, and some of you may be able to use this at home too. Use the two videos below to help.

There are other free online tools available though...

One such tool is Vectary (vectary.com) and you can sign up to it with your google account. You will find that there are lots of help videos to help you to achieve different effects... all the way from lighting and shadows up to full animations. If you wish to achieve fully photorealistic renders, it does require you to download an extra component - so this is only possible if you wish to do this on your own computer at home, rather than on your school chromebook. Fully photorealistic renders are not required though, so this would be down to your preference.

Finally if all the other options fail OR you are short of time OR that your computer is struggling to cope this little 'Render Cheat' is a good option to get a more realistic representation of your final idea.

Presentation Board

Once you have rendered your product you will be ready to start producing your presentation board. Please watch the video below to get you started with this pocess and to understand what you will need to include on this.

The idea of a presentation board is to explain your concept to a range of different stakeholders to that they ‘understand’ it. It is ONE sheet or board that clearly lays out the fundamentals of your design idea.

So it should include:

+ A brand logo

+ A product name

+ An introduction / sentence to introduce your product (the basic idea)

+ Multiple rendered images of your product

+ The product in context (eg location or interacting with user)

+ Info about its main functionalities (USP’s)

It should also:

+ Have a consistent look and feel

+ Fit with the brand ethos

+ Appeal to the target market

+ Be well designed (good structure /balance / layout / consistency )

Brand Name & Logo

One important part of the presentation board is the addition of the logo and a brand name. This is always challenging to do from scratch but luckily for us there are alot of clever programers who have built tools to help us with this process. There are lots of tools available but the ones below are a good first step to help you with this process.

Firstly use a tool like namelix to help you create a brand name. You use key words realted to your product and it creates some potenetial brand names for you.

Secondly use an online tool like https://brandmark.io/ to automatically create some logo options. If you would like to have a go yourself I would recommend using the free online software vectr alongside a symbols platform like thenounproject which has a large range of free icons you can download.
