EVALUATION

1

EVALUATION OF THE DESIGN SOLUTION

At the end of the previous section, you should have conducted an interview with your primary user. If you have conducted a comprehensive review with them, and you have video or audio evidence of this, then you can proceed on to the Evaluation of your design solution.

If not...

Before you proceed any further with your Evaluation, you will need to get some feedback from your primary user. It is vital that you do this before evaluating your design solution.

How to go about this:

  • Show your primary user your designs - this will include prototypes, your CAD and any renders you have produced, along with how you visualise the product being marketed.

  • You will need to have a conversation with them - you may wish to have a series of questions pre-written so that you can ensure that you find out what you need to know.

  • If the conversation cannot be conducted in person, then you will need to make sure that they can properly access visual material and be able to answer your questions via video chat or similar.

  • You MUST RECORD the conversation, preferably on video but failing that an audio recording will be enough.

Evaluation

What is required now is a full and critical evaluation of strengths and weaknesses with comprehensive suggestions for modification and consideration of possible design optimisation presented.

How to go about this:

- Get opinions from a variety of stakeholders

- Check your final concept against your 'Design Requirements'
- Is it ‘marketable’?
- Objective evaluation of all your developments, interviews and final design, including highlighting strengths &              weaknesses
- Suggest 3 modifications of the design which would improve it (based on findings above) this could be enhanced with CAD models or detailed sketches.

NB: This is not about proving that your product is perfect - you need to be objective and highlight aspects that could be better and would improve the product.

Evaluation of the design
solution

MB1

Superficial evaluation of strengths and/or weaknesses with little or no
suggestions for modification and/or
consideration of possible design optimisation presented.

MB2

Sufficient critical evaluation of strengths and/or weaknesses with some suggestions for modification and/or consideration of possible design optimisation presented.

MB3

Good critical evaluation of
strengths and weaknesses with detailed suggestions for modification and consideration of possible design optimisation presented.

MB4

Full and critical evaluation of strengths and weaknesses with comprehensive suggestions for modification and consideration of possible design optimisation presented.

1.

Get opinions from a variety of stakeholders

Ask more than one person for their opinions and feedback on your design solution - gather some quotes from them, or pictures of them giving your idea a thumbs up (or thumbs down!)

2.

Check your final concept against your 'Design requirements'

Under each requirement state whether your design / final prototype meets this and explain through evidence - where is this evidence? What page?

3.

Is it marketable?

Is there a place in the current market for it? How do you know? How can you prove this? Do your stakeholder / users agree?

4.

Objective evaluation

This is the conclusions you draw about all of your developments, interviews and final design, including highlighting strengths & weaknesses. You need to be objective, and open to spotting where you could have done things better.

5.

Modifications

Suggest 3 modifications of the design which would improve it (based on findings above) this could be enhanced with CAD models or detailed sketches.
