What is the aim?
The aim of this would be to do some hands on product testing os similar products which is might be useful to handle.

eg If you were designing a tennis racket it would be useful for you to do some testing of a variety that are already on the market. Given that a tennis racket is a product that you handle a lot having an opportunity to test a range and pull out positives and negatives of a variety of will help you when it comes to designing the product yourself.
What to do?
Simply see if you can get your hands on 2-3 of the same or similar product to use. This may involve asking to borrow items from other people so you have a variety

You will want to record yourself using / interacting with the product. Then be balanced and consider what works well and what could be improved.
How to use it?
As always you will want good quality evidence that you have carried out this task so just saying you have done it is not enough. Take videos, photos or write notes.
You will have discovered some new insight into similar products that might be particularly useful in the design stage. You might also have found design features you hadn't considered but should, you may want to add to your design criteria later in the process.
